Brazil
Latin America's work capital, at half the rent
São Paulo is where the money, the offices, and the flights in Latin America all converge, and a furnished one-bedroom in a good neighbourhood costs less than a room in most of the cities on this list. The catch is not price but paperwork: a conventional Brazilian lease wants a guarantor with property in the state. Furnished monthly rentals are the standard way around it, and they are what Plextell lists here.
Cost of living
Benchmarks for one person, in the local currency. Rent assumes a furnished home let for thirty days or more.
Condomínio fees are bundled on Plextell listings; on local leases they are extra.
Single fares are R$5.20 with free transfers inside the network.
Municipal markets undercut the supermarkets substantially.
Fibre is fast and cheap; most furnished flats already have it.
Per person. A weekday prato feito lunch runs R$25 – 40.
Visa, work and housing rules
The routes people actually use to stay past a tourist window, and what the law calls the home you rent while you are here.
01
Brazil has run one since 2022: a year, renewable once, for remote workers employed outside Brazil. It asks for roughly US$1,500 a month in income or US$18,000 in savings, plus health cover.
02
Most of Europe, Korea, Japan, and Mexico enter visa-free for ninety days in any one-hundred-and-eighty, extendable once at the Federal Police. Brazil reinstated the visa requirement for US, Canadian, and Australian passports in April 2025 — that one is an e-visa filed online.
03
Citizens of Mercosur and associated states can apply for a two-year residence permit on the basis of nationality alone, with full work rights. It is the simplest long route into Brazil if your passport qualifies.
Thirty days and up
Brazilian tenancy runs on the Lei do Inquilinato (Law 8.245/1991), which separates a seasonal let of up to ninety days from an ordinary residential lease. Past ninety days the contract is residential, and the standard term is thirty months. Furnished monthly rentals let you avoid the fiador — the guarantor with property in the state that a conventional lease demands — which is the single biggest obstacle for anyone arriving without local ties.
