A remote-work summer on a strong currency
Cape Town runs on the southern-hemisphere calendar, which is why it fills with remote workers between November and March: mountain, ocean, fast fibre, and a cost of living that makes a European salary go three times further. The rental market here is openly seasonal — landlords price the summer at a premium and the winter at a discount, and a four-month stay is an ordinary thing to ask for.
Cost of living
Benchmarks for one person, in the local currency. Rent assumes a furnished home let for thirty days or more.
December to February is the peak; winter lets run well below the band.
MyCiTi covers the Atlantic seaboard; most stays budget for ride-hailing too.
Local produce is cheap; imported goods are not.
Uncapped fibre is widely available and usually bundled on Plextell listings.
Per person. A ten percent tip is customary.
Visa, work and housing rules
The routes people actually use to stay past a tourist window, and what the law calls the home you rent while you are here.
01
Introduced in 2024 for remote employees of foreign companies. It asks for an annual income around one million rand and runs up to three years, with a tax exemption in the first six months of a twelve-month window.
02
Most of Europe, North America, Japan, Brazil, and Australia are admitted visa-free for ninety days; Korean passports get thirty. An extension is applied for inside the country and takes time, so plan dates around the ninety rather than against it.
03
Occupation-listed and renewed periodically, this is the standard route for a longer placement. It is granted on the skill rather than a specific employer, which makes it unusually portable.
Thirty days and up
A lease of a month or more falls under the Rental Housing Act, and the Consumer Protection Act sits over the top of it: a fixed-term consumer lease can be cancelled on twenty business days' notice, with a reasonable penalty, whatever the contract says. Deposits must be held in an interest-bearing account and returned with the interest earned. Joint incoming and outgoing inspections are the landlord's legal obligation, not a courtesy — insist on both.
Written as orientation, not legal advice. Rules change, and they turn on your circumstances — confirm before you commit to dates.
Verified homes
Every home is verified before it goes live, let on a residential lease, and priced by the month with no brokerage fee.
